Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Usage Policy
International Journal of Renewable Energy Research (IJRER) Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) Usage Policy
The International Journal of Renewable Energy Research (IJRER) places a high premium on maintaining scientific integrity, originality, and author accountability. While acknowledging the potential of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, DALL-E, Midjourney) in scholarly writing and research processes, the journal establishes the following rules and requirements for their use.
1. Authorship and Accountability
- GenAI Tools Cannot Be Authors: Generative AI tools cannot, under any circumstances, be listed as an author, co-author, or official contributor. Authorship requires human responsibility for the integrity and scholarly content of the work.
- Full Responsibility: Authors are fully responsible for the accuracy, originality, and ethical compliance of the entire content of the submitted manuscript, including any sections, analyses, or figures generated or assisted by GenAI tools. All liabilities arising from inaccurate, misleading, or plagiarized outputs generated by the tool rest solely with the authors.
2. Permitted Uses and Limitations
GenAI tools may be used as an assisting utility, rather than a direct academic contributor, to the scholarly work.
Permitted Uses (Limited and Under Human Supervision)
- Language and Editing Improvements: Checking grammar, spelling, improving readability, and enhancing linguistic fluency.
- Text Refinement: Rephrasing or summarizing existing human-written text (provided it does not alter the scientific argument or conclusion).
- Code Generation and Debugging: Generating or debugging code snippets used in the research (provided the author verifies the code and assumes full responsibility for its accuracy).
- Visual and Graphic Preparation: Assisting in the aesthetic or format-based arrangement or creation of figures, tables, or charts (the underlying data and content must be entirely the author's original work).
Strictly Prohibited Uses
- Creation of Core Scientific Content: The wholesale production of the manuscript's core sections, such as the Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results/Conclusions, or Discussion sections, by GenAI, or using it as a substitute for the author's intellectual contribution.
- Data Analysis and Interpretation: Performing raw data analysis, interpreting results, or forming academic arguments.
3. Transparency and Declaration Requirement
Authors are obliged to disclose the use of any GenAI tools in a clear and transparent manner.
Declaration Format
- Dedicated Section: The use of GenAI tools must be explicitly stated in a dedicated section titled “Declaration of Generative AI Use” or within the Acknowledgements section of the manuscript, located before the Reference List.
- Required Details: The declaration must include the following information:
- The Full Name of the GenAI Tool used (e.g., ChatGPT, Midjourney, Gemini).
- The Version Number or Model Name (e.g., GPT-4, DALL-E 3).
- A detailed description of What Purpose the tool served and Which Section of the manuscript it assisted (e.g., "ChatGPT-4 was used for the grammar check of the Abstract" or "The basic layout of Figure 3 was generated using Midjourney V5.2").
Citation Obligation
Any text that is directly quoted or heavily paraphrased from a GenAI tool must be cited using an appropriate citation style (e.g., APA 7) and included in the reference list:
Example APA 7 Citation: OpenAI. (2025). ChatGPT (GPT-5) [Large language model]. Retrieved from https://chat.openai.com/
4. Plagiarism and Ethical Risks
- Verification Burden: Authors are responsible for diligently checking for potential plagiarism or "hallucinations" (false information) that GenAI tools may produce.
- Confidentiality and Copyright: Authors must refrain from inputting confidential, proprietary, copyrighted, or sensitive data into GenAI tools, as there is no guarantee that data entered into these systems will remain private.
5. Editor and Reviewer Responsibilities
- The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject an article, request corrections, or initiate an ethics procedure against the author(s) if non-compliance with this policy is detected.
- Reviewers are encouraged to state if they use AI tools (e.g., to summarize the abstract or check the language) in their review process, and they must maintain strict confidentiality by not uploading any part of the confidential manuscript to external GenAI or third-party AI systems.
This policy will be reviewed regularly to reflect technological advancements and evolving ethical practices in academic publishing.
